After leaving Belmont Street around 9pm to head home, Angie and Jenna were feeling low and useless and were racking their brains for ways to discover some clues.

“Doesn’t the older couple, Eugene and Joan, live nearby here,” Tom asked.

“Three streets over,” Angie said.

“Why don’t we take a ride by their house,” Josh suggested. “Check that everything’s okay.”

Tom turned the truck to the right instead of going left on the road back to Sweet Cove and drove slowly past the Willoughbys’ blackened home.

“What a mess.” Tom couldn’t believe his eyes.

“How can a person do this?” Josh asked. “What’s missing inside someone that allows him to cause such destruction? To ruin other’s people’s lives. Is it rage at the world? Is that what does this?”

No one could answer the question.

Angie spotted Eugene standing at his front door staring with a scowl at the unknown truck moving towards his house.

“Can you stop for a second?” Angie got out of the car when Tom pulled to the curb. “It’s me, Mr. Foster. Are you okay?”

“Oh, it’s you, Angie.” Eugene breathed a sigh of relief. “I didn’t recognize the truck. I wondered who was driving around the neighborhood. We’re okay.”

Jenna, Tom, and Josh emerged and headed over to talk to the older man just as Joan opened the door to the porch. Her face lit up when she saw who was there.

“We didn’t go over to Belmont Street,” Joan told them. “We didn’t want to see it. It’s all too much.”

Eugene said, “The neighbors told us that the Madisons are shaken and upset, but are unhurt. We’re very thankful for that.”

“The house on the other hand is a total loss,” Joan said. “Were you there? Did you see it? Do you agree?”

“We don’t have the experience to know for sure,” Angie said. Wanting to turn the conversation to something more uplifting, she introduced Tom and Josh to the couple.

“You’re Angie’s fiancé,” Joan said to Josh as she stepped forward to shake his hand. “And you’re Jenna’s husband. Two fine men. You’re lucky to have these women in your lives.” Joan looked to Angie and Jenna. “And you two young women have found wonderful men.” Moving to Eugene, the older woman clutched his arm and rested her head on her husband’s shoulder. “Just like my wonderful Eugene.”
